New Empowerment Center opening in Garden City

GARDEN CITY, Ga. (WTOC) - A Georgia lawmaker is teaming up with a local health system to help fight poverty in the Greater Savannah area.

On Monday, July 15, State Representative Carl Gilliard will announce the opening of the Empowerment Center in Garden City. The center is a partnership between Representative Gilliard’s Feed the Hungry Program and St. Joseph’s/Candler. Together, these two organizations will be responsible for bringing in local and state organizations to provide resources to those living in poverty.

“So this is going to give people the chance to get careers, give people a second chance with the companies, to get them into those jobs and careers,” said Rep. Carl Gilliard, D, District 162.

GARDEN CITY, Ga. (WTGS) — On Monday, Representative Carl Gilliard partnered with leaders from St. Joseph's Candler to announce the opening of the Empowerment Center in Garden City.

“Today we’re changing the narrative on poverty and giving poverty a pink slip," said Representative Gilliard.
The building will provide space for free services like job training and career fairs in one central location.

GARDEN CITY, Ga. (WTGS) — The Garden City Empowerment Center hosted a series of housing fairs Wednesday to help people in the community begin the house-buying process.

Rep. Carl Gilliard said because of the current housing market, many are left out when it comes to home ownership.

He said many services are available for participants, such as lenders that can provide up to $35,000 in down payment assistance.

The center is a collaboration between State Rep. Carl Gilliard (R-Garden City) and St. Joseph's/Candler to help people gain job skills, education.

The Empowerment Center is now open in Garden City.
